WE PRESERVE PHILADELPHIA'S AFRICAN AMERICAN ASSETS!
The Society to Preserve Philadelphia African American Assets (SPPAAA) is a Philadelphia-based charitable organization founded by Germantown local Deborah Gary. Motivated by her passion for real estate and history, Gary established SPPAAA in response to the challenges posed by gentrification and the loss of historically significant African American properties in Philadelphia. Observing how younger generations sometimes struggled to maintain family properties with deep cultural and historical roots, she sought to create an organization focused on education, awareness, and advocacy for preserving these important African American sites across the city your business offers? Say it here.
SPPAAA’s mission is to preserve, promote, and protect the historical and cultural assets linked to Philadelphia’s African American communities. The organization works to document, safeguard, and celebrate African American heritage through advocacy and community engagement, ensuring that this invaluable history remains a living part of Philadelphia's identity. They also aim to educate residents about the significance of preservation and inspire pride in local historic treasures .
The society was founded by Deborah Gary, whose firsthand experience with the effects of gentrification and property loss led her to form SPPAAA. Together with co-founder Jacqueline Wiggins, a former educator, the organization has emphasized the educational role of preservation work, encouraging people to understand the significance of their neighborhoods and the African American history embedded within. From its inception, SPPAAA has partnered with influential groups like the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia to leverage resources and expertise in historic preservation.
The Society to Preserve Philadelphia African American Assets (SPPAAA) envisions a future where the diverse narratives of African Americans in Philadelphia are honored, preserved, and celebrated.
