MISSION
SPPAAA’s mission is to preserve, promote, and protect the historical and cultural assets linked to Philadelphia’s African American communities. The organization works to document, safeguard, and celebrate African American heritage through advocacy and community engagement, ensuring that this invaluable history remains a living part of Philadelphia's identity. They also aim to educate residents about the significance of preservation and inspire pride in local historic treasures .
Purpose
The society was founded by Deborah Gary, whose firsthand experience with the effects of gentrification and property loss led her to form SPPAAA. Together with co-founder Jacqueline Wiggins, a former educator, the organization has emphasized the educational role of preservation work, encouraging people to understand the significance of their neighborhoods and the African American history embedded within. From its inception, SPPAAA has partnered with influential groups like the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia to leverage resources and expertise in historic preservation.
Vision
The Society to Preserve Philadelphia African American Assets (SPPAAA) envisions a future where the diverse narratives of African Americans in Philadelphia are honored, preserved, and celebrated. We strive to be a leading force in safeguarding historical sites, artifacts, and stories that reflect the rich cultural heritage of African Americans.
