Society to Preserve Philadelphia African American Assets

Key Projects and Partnerships

  • Historic Site Documentation and Preservation:
SPPAAA actively works to fill gaps in official inventories of African American heritage sites by adding detailed descriptions and historical context, ensuring that the stories behind these places are acknowledged and preserved. This includes collaboration with the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia to research and plan preservation efforts for sites such as the Byberry Township African American Burial Ground, a historic cemetery dating back to at least 1780 for free and enslaved Blacks
  • Educational Outreach:
The society emphasizes educating communities about the importance of historic preservation. Workshops, public talks, and community engagement initiatives encourage Philadelphia residents to value and protect their local African American heritage. Co-founder Jacqueline Wiggins highlights the importance of community awareness in safeguarding cultural assets
  • Advocacy and Awareness:
SPPAAA advocates for policies and public recognition of African American heritage sites in Philadelphia. Through partnerships and public campaigns, the organization raises awareness about the cultural significance and challenges facing preservation of Black history in the city .
